Etymology: Named for the East African Maravi Kingdom of the 16th century. The word "maravi" means "fire flames".

Capital: Lilongwe.
Independence / foundation: British missionary and trading activity increased in the area around Lake Nyasa in the mid-1800s, and Britain declared a protectorate, called British Central Africa, over what is now Malawi in 1891 and eliminated various political entities that sought to retain their autonomy over the subsequent decade.
The British renamed the territory Nyasaland in 1907 and it was part of the colonial Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland, including present-day Zambia and Zimbabwe, from 1953 to 1963 before gaining independence as Malawi in 1964.

- David Livingstone, a Scottish explorer, first traveled through the region during the 19th century. He paved the way for further European influence. Blantyre is Malawi’s second-largest city and is named after David Livingstone’s Scottish birthplace. It was founded in 1876.
- Malawi's former name is Nyasaland. Nyasaland gained independence in 1964 and changed its name to Malawi. The name Malawi means “flaming waters” and makes reference to the sun setting over Lake Malawi.
- Lake Malawi National Park is home to hundreds of species, nearly all endemic. Its importance for the study of evolution is comparable to that of the Galapagos Islands.

- The date they were posted.
The safety scores range from 1 to 4 with 1 being the safest and 4 being the most dangerous for solo female travelers.
Thus, the lower the score, the safer the country.
